NIH Raises Awareness of Celiac DiseaseCeliac disease, an immune reaction to gluten, affects about one in 141 people in the United States.1  Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley. This autoimmune disease interferes with the body’s ability to absorb nutrients through the small intestine.

Celiac disease was once thought to be uncommon in the United States; however, research findings estimate that more than 3 million Americans are affected by this disease, and more than 95 percent of people remain undiagnosed.2 To close this gap, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) developed a campaign to raise awareness among health care professionals and the public.

The Celiac Disease Awareness Campaign, a service of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, offers free resources for health care professionals and the public. The Awareness Campaign provides fact sheets, booklets, practice tools for health care professionals, NIH research information, and resources from professional and nonprofit organizations that focus on celiac disease.
