BLH Staff Presents at APHA Conference

Rockville, Maryland, October 31, 2012 – BLH staff presented a coauthored paper at the 140th Annual Meeting and Exposition of the American Public Health Association (APHA), which was held October 27–31, 2012, in San Francisco, California.

The presentation, “Food Insecurity Is Associated With Cigarette Smoking Among Latinos,” was based on a paper coauthored with scientists at the National Cancer Institute. The study results provide the first evidence that food insecurity is associated with current smoking among U.S. Latino adults. These findings suggest that being a current smoker can exacerbate nutritional deprivation in a population that is disproportionately affected by poverty and poor health outcomes. They also indicate that less acculturated Latinos—those who speak primarily Spanish—were more likely to be food insecure than highly acculturated individuals.

The APHA Annual Meeting attracts more than 13,000 national and international physicians, administrators, nurses, educators, researchers, epidemiologists, and related health specialists, making it the world’s oldest and most-attended meeting of public health professionals. The meeting’s program addresses current and emerging issues in the field to help prevent disease and promote health. BLH staff met with other public health researchers and practitioners to share research and to discuss the implications of the research findings.

“Our staff members contribute to research, publications, and presentations to help further the field’s efforts to combat and prevent disease,” says BLH’s President and CEO, Benjamin L. Harris. “BLH is proud of the contributions of our staff within the public health field.”
