Rockville, Maryland – The World Conference on Tobacco or Health (WCTOH) is a triennial conference that attracts tobacco researchers, health professionals, and representatives from more than 100 countries around the world. The 15th WCTOH was held in Singapore at the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre from March 20 to 24. Its theme was “Towards a Tobacco-Free World: Planning Globally, Acting Locally.” As noted in the welcome message, Philip Eng, the 15th WCTOH President, explained the significance of this year’s theme—“establishing global partnerships to create strategies and to act effectively at the local level.”

Two BLH Technologies, Inc., staff members attended the WCTOH in Singapore this year to support a BLH client, the National Cancer Institute (NCI), at a full-day smokeless tobacco preconference workshop and to present BLH’s own research project. The preconference workshop included delegates representing countries from all six of the major continents in the world. Delegates learned about smokeless tobacco from regions across the globe and discussed and exchanged ideas about ways to implement new smokeless tobacco policies in their respective countries and to research more unexplored areas of smokeless tobacco. At the main conference, a BLH staff member presented on an abstract for a manuscript on weight-related behaviors and smoking among overweight and obese smokers as well as normal and underweight smokers. The conference also served as a platform for BLH to represent NCI and to collaborate with international organizations and ministries of health.

“BLH’s presence at WCTOH is part of our global health initiative aimed at reaching special populations,” says the BLH President and CEO, Benjamin L. Harris. “We are pleased to have had this opportunity to present and learn from others who are equally committed to the safety and well-being of all citizens.”
