The Importance of Focusing on Global Health

We might have read the alarming stories over the past several years about global outbreaks of Ebola, SARS, or influenza. Or because water is such a basic need, perhaps stories about struggles for clean and safe water in Flint, Michigan, and elsewhere in the world have drawn our attention. Most of us have a connection to cancer, so we might notice stories about cancer rates in other countries, especially how they compare to the United States.

Human Microbiome Project

Did you know that humans are made up mostly of microbes? In fact, we have more than 100 trillion of them. I was surprised to learn that each person has 10 times more microbes than human cells. Most microbes live in our digestive system, particularly the large intestine.

Prevention of Infections Globally Starts at Home

Our parents had good reasons for telling us to wash our hands. Not only did that make us cleaner; it also kept us from spreading disease. It’s unpleasant to think about, but germs from our bodies that get on our hands after we cough, sneeze, or use the bathroom can make others sick. In fact, infections that spread by not washing our hands remain a serious and persistent problem worldwide.

Healthy Fathers Can Create Healthy Families

Fathers can play a huge role in the lives of their families, especially their children. In addition to being a role model to look up to, his involvement in learning contributes greatly to the health of the family and the development of children. In fact, as the head of the household, fathers have a direct correlation in providing physical, mental, and emotional health for the entire family unit.

A Better World Starts With You

Physicist and chemist Marie Curie said, “You cannot hope to build a better world without improving the individuals. To that end, each of us must work for his [or her] own improvement and, at the same time, share a general responsibility for all humanity, our particular duty being to aid those to whom we think we can be most useful.”
